Getting started on a writing assignment

Students often find it overwhelming to get started on an essay or other writing assignment, not only in terms of the actual writing that has to be done but also in terms of developing ideas and for the project and to structure the text.

AWELU provides hands-on advice on how to tackle common aspects of writing at university. As instructions and expectations differ between courses and between disciplines, students need to check what guidelines they may have received from their teachers.

The first question you need to consider is therefore what kind of text are you expected to produce? Terms like essay, paper, and report can be used for a range of text types, and you need to find out what is expected on the particular assignment you have ahead of you.
